Adding chlorine to your water is not a process where you just add one or two tablets a week. Many people tell me that their current supplier has just told them to add one or sometimes two tablets every week. If only life was so simple. When you add chlorine, whether tablets or granules, what you are trying to do is maintain a chlorine level in your pool of about 3ppm. The only way you can do this with any real accuracy is to measure the chlorine levels when you add the chlorine. Chlorine is used up both by killing the bacteria in the water and also by the UV light from the sun. How much chlorine you will need to add will depends on how dirty the water is and how much your pool has been used since you last added chlorine and how long it is since you last added chlorine. There are a number of ways you can check the levels of chlorine in your pool water. Chemipool sell pool testing strips as we think that these are the easiest to use. However, testing tablets and digital meters are also available.
You should in fact test chlorine levels every day and top up if required. Running a pool with chlorine is not a once a week maintenance task. So many of the problems people have with their pool water would not occur in the first place if the chlorine levels were maintained at the right level.
Whatever your supplier tells you, get some testing strips (or some other testing kit) and use them. Keep the chlorine levels in your pool at the correct levels and many of your other problems will go away.
